Catedral de Santiago de Chile

The Cathedral of Santiago de Chile is one of the most popular religious attractions of the city. In the space on which it stands this monumental building there were two cathedrals, both destroyed by two separate earthquakes. The present building dates from 1748, the year in which the foundation stone was laid. The Metropolitan Cathedral is situated between the Cathedral and Bandera streets in the vicinity of the Plaza de Armas. In fact, from this historic area can be accessed more easily.

The Cathedral of Santiago de Chile is one of the most popular religious attractions of the city. In the space on which it stands this monumental building there were two cathedrals, both destroyed by two separate earthquakes. The present building dates from 1748, the year in which the foundation stone was laid. The Metropolitan Cathedral is situated between the Cathedral and Bandera streets in the vicinity of the Plaza de Armas. In fact, from this historic area can be accessed more easily.

The first Cathedral of Santiago de Chile began to rise in 1566 and be complete in 1600. Although its dimensions were smaller than those of the existing building, its design presented a detailed craftsmanship. The main entrance was located on Cathedral Street, staying in that location until the eighteenth century. The 1648 earthquake seriously damaged the foundation, but the structure was restored by Gaspar de Villarroel initiative. However, these works are not compensated for building construction needs of the time, why a century after it was decided to tear down the cathedral.

The new Cathedral of Santiago presented novel features: greater tamañoy new direction (towards the square). To modify the layout of the main entrance, was necessary to purchase the land located at the intersection of Bandera and Cathedral streets and place a provisional income until completion of works. The design of the second cathedral was in charge of Matias Vasquez Acuña. The butler received direct orders from the bishop of Santiago in relation to the desired size of the building and spaces available.

The face that presented the cathedral at that time was again amended in the late nineteenth century, by order of Archbishop Mariano Casanova. Currently, the Cathedral of Santiago de Chile has a central temple consists of three ships (one exchange, a right and left). The altar was a very important historical heritage until 2006 and in that year, which was replaced was built in Munich (1912) by one of granite.

Before the altar of the Cathedral of Santiago is located carved wooden seats, there are located the priests.
