More than 5 thousand kilometers presenting our country from north to south offer a wide range of climates ranging from the dryness of the northern desert to the torrential rains in the south. However, following the official definitions, the climates of Chile can be divided into three groups: arid, temperate and cold.
Santiago
Santiago has a Mediterranean climate. The seasons are well defined. Spring between September and November have moderate temperatures, contributing to the greening and flowering of plants and trees. Summer, between December and February, is dry and hot with temperatures that can exceed 30 º C, with cooler nights.
The average annual rainfall in Santiago reaches 384 millimeters.

Arid Climate
This kind of weather is in the north, between the cities of Arica and Santiago, although it has some variations in some sections.
Here is the Cordillera de la Costa serves as "screen the climate, preventing the passage of moist wind from the sea. This explains that in the north is the great Atacama Desert, one of the driest places in the world.
Between Arica and La Serena is the kind of arid desert climate, with an average annual temperature of 18 ° C on the coast. Their days are plagued by morning clouds and afternoon sun warm. Inward becomes increasingly dry and the temperature varies from 35 ° C to 0 ° C between díay night. There are even places where it has never rained and others that the casual winter rains give way to stunning desert bloom.
The stretch between La Serena and Santiago in the north is characterized by the presence of the arid climate estepárico warm. This means that the temperatures drop a little and there is a slight increase in precipitation and air humidity.
Temperate climate
Almost all the rest of the country falls into the category of mild climate, although presented in different versions depending on each specific area.
Between Santiago and Concepcion, predominantly agricultural area, there is a mild Mediterranean climate, characterized by a dry summer and a winter rain that reaches between about 340 and 1200 mm, with average temperatures year ranging from 14 ° C and 15 ° C.
From Conception to Puerto Montt is the temperate rainforest, where temperatures drop and increase rainfall, exceeding 2500 mm. This climate allows the presence of native forests and an active agricultural industry.
South of Puerto Montt to the parallel 47 °, starting temperate maritime climate. In this area there is a marked increase in rainfall, although temperatures are quite moderate due to marine influence. This occurs because it reduces the height of the Cordillera de la Costa, which allows the passage of moist air from the ocean. Finally, south of latitude 47 º S, you can find the cool temperate climate, with rainfall between 4000 and 7.000mm.
Cold Weather
Like the rest of the weather, the cold-type shows some variation depending on the topography and the location for the sea.
In the Andean Patagonian steppe is cold, with temperatures of -2.5 º C in winter and no more than 12 º C in summer. Here the rains than 350 mm.
At the peaks of the Andes is the ice cold weather kind of high, snow and low temperatures.
In Antarctica there is a cold polar type, with strong winds and temperatures that do not exceed 0 ° C for almost the entire year.
