Flag
The flag was designed by the current Minister Jose Ignacio Zenteno and designed by Antonio Arcos, Spanish military, although some argue that it was Gregorio de Andíay Varela who drew. It was legalized by the decree law of October 18, 1817, during the government of Bernardo O'Higgins, signed by Minister of War, Colonel Jose Ignacio Zenteno. It was this model which was used on 12 February 1818 on the oath of the Independence of Chile.
In 1854 the proportion was set to be saved together the colors of the flag and in 1912 established the diameter of the star. That year also found the precedence of the colors in the presidential sash and ribbons of the decorations, setting it in blue, white and red from top to bottom or left to right of the viewer.
Shield
In August 1832, with the signature of the president and his minister Joaquín Prieto Tocornal, the respective project was sent to Congress, which approved it on June 24, 1834, he became the national coat of arms final and current, with the same colors of the flag.
It consists of a field divided into two equal parts: the upper and the lower blue red. Hold the shield a condor, the bird-bodied and stronger winds that populate our huemul and the most rare and singular quadruped our territory. Both animals carry in his head a gold naval crown, which symbolizes our maritime glories. A plume of three feathers of red, white and blue crown shield. This plume was the symbol of distinction that used in the hat before the Presidents of the Republic. Below, in brackets, a ribbon with the motto 'For the reason of force'.
